Course Description

This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to operate a forklift truck safely in accordance with all relevant legislative requirements. Competence in this unit, does not in itself result in a HRWL licence to operate this plant.

Forklift truck means a powered industrial truck equipped with lifting media made up of a mast and an elevating load carriage to which is attached a pair of fork arms or other attachments that can be raised 900 mm or more above the ground, but does not include a pedestrian-operated truck or a pallet truck.

A person performing this work is required to hold a forklift truck High Risk Work Licence (HRWL).

This unit requires a person operating a forklift truck to:

  • plan for the work/task
  • prepare for the work/task
  • perform work/task
  • pack up.

Entry Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Hold 100 points of ID as per the SafeWork NSW identification checklist
  • Successfully complete the enrolment process including LLN assessment.

Where training and assessment is to be completed in the workplace, the following entry requirement is included:

  • Nominate and have approved a suitable workplace to complete the course.”

SafeWork NSW Conditions for Assessment

  • All Applicants must be 18 years of age
  • have the ability to produce 100points as per the SafeWork NSW identification checklist.
  • Speak and understand English at a level to be able to participate in the training and assessment.
  • Oral assessment can be arranged for any applicants having problem with writing and reading. An extra charge applies.

Duration

Forklift training course is held for two full days, and a SafeWork NSW licenced assessment is conducted on the third day.

Training Overview

  • Day 1-Presentation, discussion and forklift operational activities & Practical training
  • Day 2- Revision and Summative Assessments
  • Day 3-SafeWork NSW Assessment.

Vocational Outcome

This course is programmed to provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to operate a forklift truck safely, following all the relevant legislative requirements to:

  • Plan and prepare for the work task.
  • Pre-start checks & Operational checks are carried out on forklift.
  • Pick up, drive, maneuver, and place a minimum of 250kg dynamic or non-dynamic loads safely at several heights with a compliant racking system.
  • Plan Operations: Hazard management and consultation.
  • Conclude Operations: Parking, Securing the equipment and following site-specific procedures.

Pathways

Students who successfully complete this unit of competency will be awarded a statement of attainment and wallet sized card. Employment pathways upon the completion of this unit of competency include forklift operator.

Students completing this unit of competency may decide to undertake additional studies such as:

  • TLILIC0004 – Licence to operate an order picking forklift truck; and
  • TLILIC0005 – Licence to operate a boom-type elevating work platform (boom length 11 metres or more).
