Course Description

This course describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to infants, children, and adults in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.

This unit applies to a range of workers within an education and care setting who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthma and anaphylactic emergencies. This includes early childhood workers and educators who work with school age children in outside school hours care and vacation programs.

Entry Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Successfully complete the enrolment process including LLN assessment.

Duration

The total duration is 1 day. Training and assessment are conducted.

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation CPR & Defibrillator (adult, child & infant)
  • Provide basic emergency first aid response in an education and care setting

Vocational Outcome

After the successful completion of the HLTAID012- Provide First Aid in an education and care setting course, the participant will gain the following skills and knowledge:

  • Recognise and assess an emergency situation.
  • Provide first aid with established first aid procedures.
  • Communicate details of the incident
  • Review the incident.

Pathways

Students who successfully complete this unit of competency will be awarded a statement of attainment and wallet sized card. Employment pathways upon the completion of this unit of competency include possible job titles such as first aider.

Students completing this unit of competency may decide to undertake additional studies such as HLTAID014 – Provide Advanced First Aid.

Students must complete refresher courses every 3 years according to the Australian Resuscitation Council.
